Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS)
Overview
We have pledged our support to current and former LGBTQ+ armed forces members by signing up to the Pride in Veterans Standard (PiVS).
The charity Fighting with Pride (FWP) established the standard. FWP campaigns for LGBTQ+ veterans and helps people affected by the Armed Forces ban on LGBTQ+ which was in place up until 11th January 2000.
Many people faced discrimination during this period. Some faced investigations or lost their jobs in the Armed Forces because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
FWP offers practical advice, guidance and peer support. It also connects people with others who share similar lived experiences.
Our commitment
By signing the standard, we will:
- promote LGBTQ+ inclusion across our services
- understand the impact of the former Armed Forces ban on LGBTQ+ personnel
- support LGBTQ+ veterans, serving personnel and their families
- help ensure LGBTQ+ veterans are fully included in the Armed Forces Covenant
Councillor Tim Bowen, one of the council's Armed Forces Champions, said:
"The Pride in Veterans Standard was developed by Fighting with Pride. By signing up to it, Neath Port Talbot Council is showing its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ veterans, serving personnel and their families."
Supporting veterans
Kevin Brazely, Interim PiVS Manager at Fighting with Pride, visited Neath Port Talbot for the signing of the standard in 2025.
He said:
"Our Pride in Veterans Standard organisations are champions in their communities. They show they are ready to support LGBTQ+ veterans. Displaying the PiVS logo helps veterans know they will be welcomed and treated with respect. Organisations such as Neath Port Talbot Council are helping us reach more veterans who may need support."

Financial recognition scheme
Lord Etherton's Independent Review recommended measures to support LGBTQ+ veterans. This scheme is one of those measures.
The UK Government announced the LGBTQ+ Financial Recognition Scheme on 12 December 2024.
The scheme supports veterans affected by the Armed Forces ban on LGBTQ+ personnel between 27 July 1967 and 11 January 2000.
Eligible veterans can apply for financial recognition payments.
