Biodiversity Duty Plan

Neath Port Talbot Council must follow the law to care for nature and wildlife.

This is a legal rule, not a choice. It means we must always think about nature when making decisions.

When we plan, build, or manage land, we must make sure it helps protect nature.

This is part of a law called the Environment (Wales) Act 2016.

Biodiversity Duty Plan

To meet this duty, the Council has a Biodiversity Duty Plan.

The plan shows:

  • what we've done so far
  • what we plan to do next
  • how our work supports bigger goals like helping the planet and improving people’s lives. This is part of another law called the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015.

The latest plan, approved in 2023, builds on past actions and sets out new steps through to 2026.

Planning

The planning system is an important tool in nature conservation. This is demonstrated by the policy and legislation relating to biodiversity and planning. It is important to address all biodiversity issues as part of planning applications, as a failure to do so may result in an application being refused or delayed.

For detailed information on how to make your planning application run smoothly in relation to biodiversity download our free Biodiversity in Planning guide. For guidance on biodiversity and geodiversity in planning, please refer to our Local Development Plan.
