A guide to housing benefit

Universal Credit

With some exceptions, housing benefit has been replaced by a new benefit called Universal Credit.

Universal Credit, includes help with housing, so you don’t need to claim Housing Benefit

Housing and council tax support

Housing benefit helps pay part or all of your rent if you're on a low income.

You can only make a new claim for housing benefit if either of the following apply:

  • you have reached State Pension age
  • you’re in supported, sheltered or temporary housing

Entitlement

Our benefits calculator will help you find out if you're entitled to claim housing benefit.

The calculator is free to use, and the details you provide are anonymous.

Before you start, make sure you have information about your savings, income, pensions and existing benefits (for you and your partner).

Who cannot claim

Usually, you won't get housing benefit if:

  • you're getting or are eligible to claim Universal Credit
  • you rent your home from a close relative who lives in the same house
  • you own the property you're claiming benefit for, or have a mortgage on that property
  • you and your partner have joint savings or investments of more than £16,000
  • you're a foreign national subject to immigration control
