Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and Plan (LFRMSP)
Neath Port Talbot Council acts as the Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) for the county borough. Under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 (FWMA 2010) we must create a strategy and plan to manage local flood risk.
The LFRMSP 2023 identifies local flood risks from:
- surface water
- groundwater
- ordinary watercourses
It aligns with the FWMA 2010 and Wales' national strategy for Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM). By 2026, the goal is for everyone who lives in flood-risk areas to understand their risks. The plan also considers interactions with main rivers and sewers.
The strategy aims to:
- reduce flood risks
- minimise harm to people, the economy and the environment
The LFRMSP 2023 outlines:
- flood risk laws
- types of flood risks
- management goals
It details actions to manage these risks. It also explores funding options to support current and future flood risk management.
The four main goals to keep communities safe and lessen the effects of floods and coastal erosion are:
- reducing the impact of floods and coastal erosion have on:
- people
- communities
- businesses
- the environment
- better informing people about floods and coastal erosion and getting them involved
- providing an effective and sustained response to flood and coastal erosion events
- prioritising investment in the most at risk communities
