Abandoned vehicles

Overview

Please note: Waste Enforcement Officers are unable to deal with parking disputes.

A vehicle might be abandoned if:

  • it's no longer taxed: check if a vehicle is taxed
  • it's been in the same spot or area for over 14 days
  • it has flat tyres, missing wheels, broken windows or other damage
  • it's burnt out
  • the number plates are missing

If a vehicle seems abandoned, we may check DVLA records for the keeper's details and place a notice on it.

Vehicles on private land

Abandoned vehicles on private land are subject to a 15-day notice period, usually after consulting with the landowner or agent.

Untaxed and stolen vehicles

You can report an untaxed vehicle online.

If you believe the vehicle is stolen or causing an obstruction of the highway, please call South Wales Police on 101.

You can track your report if you have a myNPT account. Your details fill in automatically when you’re signed into myNPT.

Before you start

We will not investigate vehicles that have been stationary for less than 2 weeks. We may ask for a statement confirming how long the vehicle has been abandoned

To help us deal with the abandoned vehicle quickly, please tell us:

  • the make, model, registration number (number plate) and colour
  • if the number plates are missing (please confirm this)
  • the condition of the vehicle (detailing any vandalism)
  • the road tax expiry date: Check at GOV.UK
  • the exact location of the vehicle (such as the nearest address)
  • how long the vehicle has been there
  • any other information, e.g. who the owner or user may be
  • your contact details. We keep these confidential and use them to update you on our progress.

If you give false information or make an anonymous report, we might not be able to investigate.
