Signs a vehicle may be abandoned
A vehicle may be abandoned if it:
- has been in the same place for more than 14 days
- has flat tyres, missing wheels or broken windows
- is badly damaged
- is burnt out
- has no number plates
If we believe a vehicle has been abandoned, we may:
- check DVLA records for the registered keeper's details
- place a notice on the vehicle
Vehicles on private land
We can investigate abandoned vehicles on private land.
Before removing a vehicle, we will usually consult the landowner or managing agent and place a notice on the vehicle for 15 days.
Vehicles we cannot investigate
Untaxed vehicles
If a vehicle is untaxed you can report it to DVLA.
Stolen vehicles or vehicles causing an obstruction
If you believe a vehicle has been stolen or is causing an obstruction on the highway, contact South Wales Police on 101.
Before you report a vehicle
We may ask you to confirm how long the vehicle has been abandoned.
Please tell us:
- the make and model
- the registration number, or confirm if the number plates are missing
- the colour
- the condition of the vehicle, including any damage or vandalism
- the exact location, such as the nearest address
- how long it has been there
- any information about the owner or user
- your contact details
We keep your contact details confidential and may use them to update you on our investigation.
Anonymous reports or reports containing false information may affect our ability to investigate.
Submit a report
If the vehicle has been in the same place for more than 14 days without any person attending the vehicle and appears to be abandoned, you can report it online.
