English and Welsh as Additional Languages (EAL/WAL)
EAL and WAL pupils are those who speak a language other than English or Welsh as their first language.
This could be because:
- they were born in a different country
- their parents speak a different language at home
So, English or Welsh becomes an additional language.
New arrivals
New arrivals are children and young people who are migrants from outside the UK. This includes:
- refugees and asylum seekers
- children of people working or studying in the UK
- economic migrants from overseas
They are not new pupils or students from other areas in the UK. They will:
- have different levels of English and Welsh language skills
- enter the education system at different ages
- have different educational experiences
- be from different socio-economic backgrounds
Some arrive with high standards of oracy, literacy and numeracy skills.
Others have had little or interrupted schooling or may have experienced traumatic events.
