Free school meals
Primary school
All primary school children in Wales automatically receive Universal Primary Free School Meals (UPFSM).
But if you have a low household income, you should apply for free school meals. Applying could help you access additional support for your child. Your child's school may also receive extra funding.
Secondary school
You must apply for free school meals for children in secondary school.
Welsh Government have announced they are expanding Free School Meals in Secondary Schools for all pupils whose parent/carer/guardian is in receipt of Universal Credit, regardless of earnings. This is called "Expanded Free School Meals".
This will initially be for all year 7 and 8 pupils and will only cover the food element of Free School Meals. Parents whose children receive Expanded Free School Meals only will not be eligible for the Schools Essentials Grant.
Applications are now welcome from parents/carers whose children are in Year 7 and Year 8 and will qualify for Expanded Free School Meals. Expanded free school meals will be available from 02/11/2026.
Applications are now open
