Sandfields Active Travel and public space improvements

Following the public engagement held in January 2024 on the initial route design proposals for the Sandfields Active Travel Masterplan area, we have been developing more detailed designs for the top priority routes.

This project aims to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable for people to walk, wheel and cycle around the Sandfields and Aberavon seafront area. The route length is approximately 4.7km and focuses on several important local streets, including:

  • Solar Way
  • Handel Avenue
  • Purcell Avenue
  • Scarlet Avenue
  • Princess Margaret Way
  • Victoria Road
  • St Paul’s Road

Together, these improvements will create a safer, more accessible and attractive circulatory route that links National Cycle Network Route 4 on Afan Way with key destinations along the seafront.

This active travel project is complemented by wider regeneration efforts aimed at revitalising three key public spaces. These improvements will make the areas more attractive, strengthen neighbourhood connections, and help create a cleaner, greener and more vibrant place for residents and visitors. The spaces include:

  • around Memo Beach Café
  • next to the skate park
  • approach to Tywyn Primary School

This project aligns with the ongoing Aberavon Seafront Masterplan, which is designed to enhance the area for the benefit of the whole community as well as visitors.

Newbridge Road Active Travel link project

We need your help to ensure the Newbridge Road Bridge project meets the needs of your community. Share your thoughts by completing our feedback questionnaire.

The Newbridge Road Bridge Active Travel Link project will restore this historic Grade II listed structure and reopen it as a safe, accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a vital link between key areas of Port Talbot.

The scheme will transform the bridge into a shared-use path connecting Riverside Road and Newbridge Road, complemented by a new shared footway along Riverside Road and traffic-calming measures on Newbridge Road to improve safety and encourage active travel.

The re-opening of Newbridge Road Bridge is being considered alongside the wider Sandfields Masterplan, which aims to make it easier for everyone to walk, cycle or wheel for everyday journeys.

A public consultation for the Newbridge Road Bridge project will be taking place between Monday 2nd February and Sunday 15th March 2026. We are keen to understand your opinions to ensure that the scheme serves the needs of you and your community.
