Neath Port Talbot Council launches consultation on Cymmer Carriageway Realignment Project
14 May 2026
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is inviting residents, businesses and stakeholders to take part in a public consultation on the proposed Cymmer Carriageway Realignment Project, a major infrastructure scheme designed to protect local connectivity and improve safety for communities in the Afan Valley.
The Project addresses the long‑term challenges posed by ageing and failing structures at the eastern end of Maesteg Road, which currently carries all vehicles over two archways, one of which is identified as failing.
To maintain essential access to Cymmer, Glyncorrwg and Abercregan, the Council is bringing forward a proposed realignment of the carriageway to create a safer, more resilient and more direct route.
The project aims to:
Improve road safety and route efficiency
Reduce pressure on weight restricted structures
Maintain vital access for residents, businesses and public services
Support sustainable long‑term connectivity in the Afan Valley
A six week public consultation will run from 13th May to 24th June 2026, giving the community the opportunity to review the proposals, speak with the project team, and provide feedback on the designs ahead of a planned planning application submission later in the year.
The consultation will include:
A detailed consultation brochure
Online and paper feedback forms
Visualisations, including photomontages and a fly‑through of the proposed route
Three public drop‑in events at accessible local venues hosted at:
Venue | Address | Date | Time |
Cymmer Methodist Church | Brytwn Road, Cymmer, Port Talbot, SA13 3EN | Monday 1st June | 10am – 5pm |

Councillor Wyndham Griffiths, Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Connectivity at Neath Port Talbot Council, said:
“This project represents an important step in ensuring that the people of Cymmer, Glyncorrwg and Abercregan continue to have safe and reliable access in the years ahead. We are committed to engaging openly with our communities, and we encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and help shape the final proposals”
