Water safety programme

Overview

In partnership with Port Talbot RNLI, and with support from the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS), we are providing:

  • water safety training in primary schools
  • a water safety talk in secondary schools

Water Smart Schools is a free, award‑winning water safety programme designed to teach children vital water safety skills.

Pupils will develop essential knowledge, skills, and understanding to help them:

  • stay safe around water
  • make informed decisions
  • show responsible behaviour

What your child will learn

Reception to Year 2 pupils

Children in Reception to Year 2 will take part in an introductory water safety presentation. Practical, age-appropriate activities will help start them on their water safety journey.

Year 3 to Year 6 pupils

Children in Year 3 to Year 6 will take part in more in-depth water safety sessions. Over six weeks, they will develop their understanding and skills for staying safe in and around water.

Year 7 to Year 11 pupils

Children in Year 7 to Year 11 will receive a professional water safety talk from Port Talbot RNLI. This will focus on the dangers and risks associated with open water swimming.
