Data protection complaints
Overview
Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is committed to handling personal information lawfully, fairly and transparently. If you are dissatisfied with the way we have collected, used, shared or managed your personal data, you have the right to raise a data protection complaint with us.
When you can make a data protection complaint
You can make a complaint if you believe we have not handled your personal information properly. This may include situations where you think we have:
- failed to respond appropriately to a request for your personal information
- kept inaccurate or incomplete information about you
- disclosed your information incorrectly
- kept your information for longer than necessary
- used your information for a purpose different from that for which it was collected
- failed to keep your information secure
- not upheld your data protection rights
Individuals have a right to complain directly to an organisation if they believe their personal information has not been handled in line with data protection law.
How to make a data protection complaint
You should raise your concern with the Council in the first instance so that we have the opportunity to investigate and resolve the issue.

When contacting us, please provide:
- your name and contact details
- a clear description of your concern
- relevant dates and any supporting information
- any reference numbers (if applicable)
Providing sufficient detail will help us investigate your complaint thoroughly and respond as quickly as possible.
What you can expect from us
In accordance with our legal obligations, we will:
- acknowledge receipt of your complaint within 30 days
- investigate your complaint without undue delay
- keep you informed of progress where appropriate
- provide a clear written outcome, including any actions taken

If you are unhappy with our response, or believe we have not handled your complaint appropriately, you have the right to escalate your concerns to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which is the UK’s independent regulator for data protection.
