Council Tax

We have been looking for ways to cut spend and/or increase income wherever we can.

This includes:

  • considering how we might conduct our business
  • making the best use of grant funding
  • rationalising council buildings
  • reviewing contracts
  • making the most of digital technology so we are as cost-effective and flexible as possible

We also continue to make our case for appropriate funding from the Welsh Government, but increasing Council Tax is still an unavoidable part of balancing the budget.

Proposed increase

In deciding how much money to allocate to councils in 2025/2026 the Welsh Government has assumed that Council Tax will rise by an average 9.3% across Wales.

The proposed Council Tax increase for Neath Port Talbot is 7%.

We have referred to a budget gap of approximately £15 million. Without the proposed increase of 7%, or improved funding from the Welsh Government, further savings proposals and possible service reductions will be needed to set a balanced budget.

A 7% increase in Council Tax would be equivalent to the following per week:

Council Tax band Weekly increase
A £1.68
B £1.96
C £2.24
D £2.52
E £3.08
F £3.64
G £4.20
H £5.04
I £5.88

The outcome of this consultation will be considered when the final decision on Council Tax levels is made by Full Council in March 2025.
