Approved food premises
Your business must have approval before it can operate if you intend to use unprocessed products of animal origin.
This includes handling items such as:
- fresh meat
- raw minced meat
- raw milk
- eggs
Premises we approve
Premises that we approve:
- meat processing plants
- meat preparation plants
- minced meat processing operations
- mechanically separated meat processing plants
- cold stores
Premises we do not approve
Premises we do not approve:
- slaughterhouses
- cutting plants
- game-handling premises
- wholesale meat markets

Exemptions
You do not need approval if you sell direct to the public or retailers, for example:
- caterers
- pubs
- restaurants
As long as:
- food is less than 25 per cent of your trade
- you do not handle any wild game meat products
- you do not sell food outside the county your business is registered in
Apply for food premises approval
You can apply online for free.
Once we have your completed form we will arrange to visit your business.
You cannot operate until you have had approval.
